Clyde Singer

About the artist:

Clyde Singer (American 1908–1999) was a distinguished Ohio painter whose evocative work captured the everyday life of the American Midwest throughout the twentieth century.  Born in Malvern, Ohio, Singer developed an early interest in art, which was nurtured through his studies at the Cleveland School of Art and later at the Art Students League in New York City.  There, he studied under noted instructors including John Sloan, whose influence can be seen in Singer’s commitment to realism and his focus on ordinary people and urban scenes.  Singer remained in New York and followed the trail blazed by the Ashcan artists depicting everyday life in the city.  He served in the Army during World War II and when discharged, headed back to his roots in N.E. Ohio.

Singer continued to travel frequently to New York City to visit friends and paint.  His paintings and drawings are celebrated for their narrative quality, expressive brushwork, and sensitive portrayal of women and city life. His subjects often included bustling streets, quiet cafes, and intimate moments of human interaction, rendered with warmth, humor, and empathy.  Singer’s style blended elements of American Scene painting and Social Realism, making his work accessible and relatable to viewers.

Throughout his prolific career, Singer exhibited extensively, winning numerous awards and honors.  For more than 40 years, he served as the assistant director and later director of the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, where he influenced generations of artists and art lovers.  His dedication to fostering regional talent and preserving the cultural heritage of Ohio is a hallmark of his legacy. Today, Clyde Singer’s works are held in public and private collections across the country, and he is remembered as one of Ohio’s most beloved painters, whose art continues to resonate with audiences for its authenticity and insight into American life.
