Alice Schille

About the artist:

Alice Schille (American, 1869–1955) was a celebrated watercolorist and painter whose vibrant works earned her a distinguished place in American art history.  Born in Columbus, Ohio, Schille demonstrated artistic talent from an early age, eventually studying at the Columbus Art School (now the Columbus College of Art & Design) and later at the Art Students League in New York.  She further refined her skills abroad, studying in Paris at the Académie Colarossi and traveling extensively throughout Europe and North Africa.

These experiences exposed her to a range of artistic influences, from French Impressionism to the bold colors and forms of Post-Impressionism, which would deeply inform her mature style.

Schille became renowned for her luminous watercolors, often depicting scenes of European villages, markets, landscapes, and portraits imbued with a distinctive sense of light and atmosphere.  She was equally skilled in oil painting, but it was her mastery of watercolor that set her apart.  Schille mentored many aspiring artists including Ralph Fanning who went on to teach watercolor painting at Ohio State University.

Her work was shown at prestigious venues such as the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.  She was a regular exhibitor at the Carnegie International Exhibition in Pittsburgh and participated in the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915, where she received a medal for her watercolors.  Schille’s work was also featured in prominent group and solo exhibitions across the United States, as well as internationally in Paris and London.

Today, her paintings are held in major museum collections, and she is remembered as a pioneering figure who advanced the medium of watercolor and opened doors for women artists in the early twentieth century.  Schille passed away in her hometown of Columbus in 1955.
