August Biehle ( American 1885–1979) was a prominent American artist whose innovative work helped shape the landscape of early twentieth-century art in Ohio and beyond. Born in Cleveland to a family of German descent, Biehle demonstrated artistic talent from a young age, which he developed through formal training at the Cleveland School of Art and later at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich. Returning to Cleveland, he became a versatile painter, graphic artist, and designer, drawing inspiration from European modernism and American regionalism.

Biehle played a significant role in the influential “Cleveland School” of artists, contributing to the city’s vibrant arts community through his involvement with the Kokoon Arts Club, a group known for embracing avant-garde styles and organizing provocative exhibitions.

Biehle’s prolific career included mural commissions, illustration, and printmaking, with his work frequently exhibited at major museums and galleries. He was celebrated for his bold use of color, dynamic compositions, and ability to seamlessly blend elements of Cubism, Futurism, and traditional American subjects.
